vmware

I decided that I'd been wasting far too much time playing video games (Disgaea DS is my current addiction), so I figured I'd try vmware workstation. I've downloaded several linux distros, and it's fun firing them up and installing them, and evaluating them while still using Vista. I ordered another 4 gigs of ram, so that will help a lot with this. My first impressions of Kubuntu 8.10 is that it is very incomplete. I need to try Ubuntu, from what I've seen on a friend's computer it is all tied together a lot better. Still, I'm noticing some improvements from 8.04. I don't think I'd recommend Kubuntu to a brand new linux user just yet...I'm still looking for a distro that does a nice job of tying everything together with kde4. I've heard good things about Mandriva... I'll download the dvd tonight while at work. Also the Adept package manager was upgraded to the new version, and in my opinion it's a major downgrade on the interface. It simplifies it to a ridiculous degree. I'm still not used to KDE 4, it's a lot different from KDE 3 not only visually, but also just in the way it handles. However, it does look nice.. I've had a couple months to get used to Vista, and I actually am kindof preferring it right now. I guess it's sortof a big project getting Gentoo installed and getting everything the way I like it (may go back to KDE 3 for the time being, etc.) There are both things I like and dislike about Vista... one thing is for sure, my outlook has changed a lot since getting a new computer and trying out a bunch of operating systems. I used to hate Windows a lot (justifiably) but now I understand it has it's place. Mostly, as a game platform, but also for the large amount of little programs that are only for Windows. I don't mean important programs you can't live without, just a lot of non-essential and random programs. It sortof goes both ways, but I've found that a lot of the linux programs I've been used to for years really are superior for what they are used for, as compared to their window's counterparts. Anyways, it's all out there and it's all available, so this time I may have a hard time getting rid of a Windows hard drive... Guess I was in the mood to type about my computer for a little bit. It's always fun to play around and learn new stuff!

nice stat

I looked at my last 12 months chart on last.fm, and The Flaming lips are at 1000.  I got sortof burned out on them, and haven't listened to them for awhile, so it's funny I just sortof have given them a vacation for awhile after listening to them for exactly 1000 songs :)  Is kinda weird how Beck is #4 for the year too with 772 listens, considering I didn't start listening to him until like 3 months ago.  I was really into Sea Change, but lately been listening to his other albums, and I like them a lot.  I really like how last.fm does real time statistics now and lets you look at exactly your last 7 days to the hour or other time periods, instead of their limited choices before.  I appreciate last.fm a lot, it's easy to forget it's even keeping stats, just listen to whatever I feel like.  It's fun looking at my friend's stats too, once I finally convince them to get an account :)  Tonight I'm really into Agalloch.

:(

The $700 billion figure? "It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number."
Dodd proposed his own counter-proposal to Paulson's plan earlier this week. Among other things, it calls for limits on executive compensation at troubled firms and for the Treasury to take a contingent equity stake in those firms. On Tuesday, Paulson rebuffed both ideas, as it might discourage firms from participating in the bailout program.

Right Where It Belongs
Nine Inch Nails
See the animal in his cage that you built,
Are you sure what side you're on?
Better not look him too closely in the eye,
Are you sure what side of the glass you are on?
See the safety of the life you have built
Everything where it belongs
Feel the hollowness inside of your heart
And it's all, right where it belongs

What if everything around you,
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is that all you want to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks,
Would you find yourself, find yourself afraid to see?

What if all the worlds inside of your head,
Just creations of your own?
Your devils and your Gods, all the living and the dead
And you're really all alone?
You could live in this illusion
You can choose to believe
You keep looking but you can't find the woods
While you're hiding in the trees

What if everything around you,
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you used to know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is that all you want to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks,
Would you find yourself, find yourself afraid to see?

The Spider
Weezer
There's a spider in the drain and he's feeling pain
and he doesn't want to die any more than you or I
He's struggling to live, but he doesn't have much time
Any more than you or I
You or I
We've got to die, we've got to live
We've got to take what we can get
We sell ourselves for petty change
And when we die we rearrange
It's time to take it back again
It's time to take it back again
I want you to love me like I love you

There's nothing more for me to say
I spoke my piece, I go on my way
And fare thee well, where you go
You might need help, but I won't know
'Cause I'm up here in my own cell
It could be heaven, it could be hell
We'll never know just who we are
'Cause when we die we become a star
And stars can't talk
Because they have no mouth to speak about their past
They simply shine up in the sky
And give their light to you and I

And where would we be without their light
We call out names and then start a fight
But then again that's what we do
I hate me and hate you too
'Cause I'm in pain, just like the spider in the drain
I am a fighter, but I can't win, I've got to lose
Give me strength to see me through
And ease the pain that I must feel
As my bones break and I taste the steel
As i go down the drain

I'm insane

really did LOL

great page on firefox

I broke down and installed firefox 3 today. I usually (last few years) wait until a few point releases come out, but I liked some of the new functionality (awesome bar is awesome!!!!) and the memory usage seemed to be a lot less. I asked a friend who just switched (after having her ubuntu computer lock up a ton before firefox did somthing about that huge bug) if it was working ok, then took the plunge. Good stuff :) Didn't really make my day off, but wow what a great update :)

Was posdef worth it. Not only do pages load faster, but yes memory usage is way down. Everything is more responsive, even within the scope of like scrolling down and refreshing. I have to say Firefox 3 is full of freaking win.

That being said Opera 9.5 is pretty damn awesome and if Opera and Mozilla Firefox weren't so awesome I'd love to use Konqueror as my browser.

Anyways, I found this article on some easy ways to change your firefox, and it contains like 3-4 changes I implemented and already like a lot. I have had that stylish extention installed for awhile, so this page full of no brainers, and some things that I feel aren't neccessary. The comments are full of good stuff too. (bottom of post)

My switch to firefox 3 was pretty smooth. I had backed up my entire .mozilla dir beforehand, but it was just a matter of firing up firefox 3, letting it sort out extention incompatabilities (like 25) and trying to fix some (like 4) (but the other 21 are stuff that aren't a big deal). Then it loaded up, and I had to check the help/about box to make sure I was running firefox 3...looked exactly the same. Pretty damn solid. I'll delete my backup in a couple of days, I'm pretty sure. The utter improvements in interface speed are going to make it hard to go back to firefox 2, not to mention the sheer speed increases in page loading...and memory usage seems to be way down.

Cosmic Grim Reaper Seen For First Time

So many galaxies visable, and from those millions you gotta hope you get a chance to watch an event like this during our short lifetimes :) I guess the jist is a red giant that has swelled to many many times the size of our star finally ran out of nuclear fuel, and they caught all the data as it went to supernova. :)

:)

My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion
Flaming Lips
They tell us autumn's a-comin'
Soon everything around us will die
Only a fool believes that he is
Different from the birds in the sky

All those birds go chasin'
Some better, sunny days
You can't hear them singing
Cause they've all gone away

But this one bird didn't leave you
It stayed through the wintertime
You can't hear it sing
But you can hear it as it flies

So don't you believe them
They'll destroy you with their lies
They only see the obvious
They see the sun go down but they don't see it rise

This one bird didn't leave you
You can hear it as it flies
It's not very loud
But you can hear it if you try

So don't you believe them
Yes, it's true, someday everything dies
We won't let that defeat us
We can't hear him sing but we can hear it as it flies

pictures of one of Earth's last uncontacted tribes firing bows and arrows

Looks like they got really freaked out and completely put on red body paint, and when the helicopter showed back up they attacked! I really wish we could leave isolated people like this alone, but will probably be impossible. Is crazy there are still cultures not in some way assimulated with modern society, at all.

neurochemicals

Kuro5shin is a questionable source, at best, but sometimes they do have a interesting article.

This one is fun as it goes into the effects of dopamine and serotonin and others, as well as how certain substances and circumstances can affect brain chemistry. Sortof short. I'm still looking for that chart with dozens of drugs and the related neurotransmitters they effect.

everything but the girl :) great band!

Low tide of the night
Everything but the girl

London in the low tide of the night
And not a taxi cab in sight.
Anesthetized I start the journey home.
I've been living months alone.
I've been avoiding things -
the phone rings,
I use the answerphone.
Inside out in the daytime,
Outside in in the night time.
Inside out in the daytime,
Outside in in the night time.
When you're down and troubled
You don't tell your friends,
You don't tell your family.
I won't let them talk about me.
I'm gonna let nobody down.
Soho in the high tide of the day
And for a while I'm swept away -
I just forget it.
I use my walkman when I walk,
And I don't talk,
But later on the moment's gone and I don't get it.
Inside out in the daytime,
Outside in in the night time.
Inside out in the daytime,
Wrong at the right time.
When you're down and troubled
You don't tell your friends,
You don't tell your family.
I won't let them talk about me.
I'm gonna let nobody down.
Who shall I be tonight?
Who's gonna see tonight?
Who shall I be tonight?
Inside out in the daytime,
Wrong at the right time.
I wanna know I'm good for you.
Outside in in the night time,
Right at the wrong time.
I wanna know I'm good to you.
When you're down and troubled
You don't tell your friends,
You don't tell your family.
I won't let them talk about me.
I'm gonna let nobody down.
No, no, no, no
I won't let them talk about me.
I'm gonna let nobody down down down down.

Nettie
Type o negative

Nettie, no need to cry
Let me wipe those teardrops from your eyes

In the dark bathed in Cathode ray blue
Miss Red Hook of 1922
Weeping silently for the pain of others
Every night a tearful rosary
A victim of the curse of empathy
Her reward for compassion is to suffer

Nettie, no need to cry
Let me wipe those teardrops from your eyes

My shortcomings I know caused her grief
Still she loves me. This i can’t believe!
Responding not with anger but a prayer
Heaven’s just Southwest of Cobble Hill
True, I am the son of an Angel
Maternally, not one woman compares

Nettie, no need to cry
Let me wipe those teardrops from your eyes

If you fall, I will catch you
When you’re lost, I’ll be there soon
Far away, but of course near
When you’re sad, I’m always here

Thank you for saving me from my self
Your compassion became its own hell
Unequally beautiful inside and out
Without a doubt

Nettie, no need to cry
Let Me wipe those teardrops from your eyes

The Flaming Lips
excerpt from The Spiderbite Song :)

When you fell in love, it was so sweet
So devoted, completely swept off your feet
Love is the greatest thing a heart can know
But the hole that it leaves in its absence can make you feel so low

And I was glad that it didn’t destroy you
How sad that would be
Cause if it destroyed you
It would destroy me

As logic stands you couldn't meet a man
Who's from the future
But logic broke as he appeared he spoke
About the Future
"We're not gonna make it" He explained how
the end will come - you and me were never meant
to be part of the future -
All we have is now -
All we've ever had was now
All we have is now
All we'll ever have is now

I noticed that he had a watch and hat
That looked familiar
He was me - from a dimension torn free

Male wasps make love to orchids

I've had a couple of wasps in here this year. The first one was just a black wasp minding his own business, and I tried to kill it but it flew off behind the couch to regenerate it's HP for a while, and I let it be. Then the next day I'd only been home for like 10 minutes and I felt something on my arm. Look down, and yes it's him. So I start unmercifully trying to smash it with my fly swatter :( I hit it like 50 times, and it just wouldn't give up :( I had to roll it with my shoe. Jeez made me feel like a murderer.

The next wasp was a yellow jacket. He was smart, he flew over to the window and just hung out there. I opened the window, he flew out. No reason for unneccessary bloodshed :)

This article is interesting as it shows wasps are really good lovers, and have a deep admiration for the innate beauty of nature.

flaming lips

Having a Flaming Lips week for sure!!! Started in with The Soft Bulletin, then been listening to all their other albums hadn't gotten to yet...these guys are awesome :)

The Flaming Lips - There You Are - Jesus Song No. 7

There you are
And you stand in the rain
And the rain fills your brain
And it makes you think that god
Was fucked up when he made this town

There you stand
With your bleedin' hands
And you don't understand
Why you work so goddamn hard
To be anything at all

There you are
And you drive in your car
And you wish for the stars
And you end up face down in the road
Dead as fuck

Expo 86

Is my favorite Death Cab song :)

I am waiting for that sense of relief
I am waiting for you to flee the scene
As you held in your hand the smoking gun
and on the floor lay the one you said you loved

and it's strange they're all basically the same
so I don't ask names anymore

miss misery

love this song so much

ballad of big nothing

another great song.

I can't just put up embedded youtube vids here for every song cause I don't want to slow down your computer. Go to this song here :) The whole album is it from is awesome.
i came for the house and the children...i let it all slip through my hands...i feel like a weight has been lifted and nothing can matter to this man
i came for the car and the vacuum. spinning my wheels into the void
i see now my ship it has come in
but it was a joke there is nothing aboard
i came for the love and the action
there I go slipping off of the sword
i feel like a chain reaction
and is it me, or is it the world?

PRICK

HINOIチーム

This band is awesome. Talk about a band to get your dopamine flowing, it's just so awesome. I know they aren't for everyone. In fact my fav song by them isn't on youtube at all, have to think about a way to put it up. :) But then I just listen to another great song by them and wonder why it isn't there too. Anyways, you have to kudos to the producers on this one, they have done a above par #1 super great job on this band.

I dunno, she always catches me by surprise. I dunno how to describe her songs, just very joyful, very intense, yet very emotional. I guess closest other band would be Portishead, yet in a very old, completely alive garden. Very triphop, yet very mysterious, and real. I enjoy her, I'll fix her songs one of these days. My Japanese songs take extra time. I make the file name romanized Japanese, but I want as close to the offical names with correct letters in my tags. There is never enough time, I always want to listen to and enjoy! you know

meshuggah like

The Dillinger Escape Plan

These guys are very solid. They are the band closest in sound to Meshuggah I've found yet, and I did set out for a few days looking for some bands to compare Meshuggah to. I ended up deciding it was impossible. Meshuggah really do stand out. Straight hardcore math metal? But very brutal? I highly highly recommend Meshuggah's new album, obZen. For me, only took a couple listens to get to where you are listening to a different song every time you come back, ah on a week to week basis. I think it's my favorite Meshuggah album, to be honest. But give Dillinger Escape Plan a chance, they stand on their own, definitely are not Meshuggah.. very good too! Heard a song by a somewhere local little band that was just utterly awesome, so fast an intricated and live, in vein of math metal....it was on youtube but I have no idea how to find them again. This kind of music can be the most relaxing music ever :)

talk about getting peed on

Here is a great interview with the author of the game of solitaire that has been packaged with how many billion overpriced versions of malware the great operating system, windows, since forever. You know what is awesome? He never got any royalties at all :) This is a great read!

master's apprentices

I'm getting to where I am enjoying Opeth's live versions immensely. This song is just bliss.

'Til the loneliness shadows the sky
I'll be sailing down and I will know
I know I can clear clouds away
Oh Is it a crime to love

Swing the heartache
Feel it inside out
When the wind cries
I'll say goodbye
Tried to learn Tried to find
To reach out for eternity
Where's the answer
Is this forever

Checkers

Been playing a lot of checkers, mostly against an A.I. I hadn't played for years and years and years...used to play some chess, hadn't realized just how easy it is to get smoked in checkers. I was playing some guy earlier and somehow after all my plotting he jumped 3 of my dudes to get a King. Anyways, anyone is welcome to challenge me to a game anytime, or even chess (although even way more rusty in that...I used to be decent). Found this website after deciding I needed some hints and tips.

The Seatbelts

These guys put together like 8 albums of music, for the anime Cowboy Bebop. The anime really rocked, not going to get into that here, but here's a few links of their music for you. "Is it real?" has literally tripped me out a few times, like I was completely sober yet felt like...I dunno can't really describe.

call me, call me, live..perfect :)

the real folk blues, live. Great song, didn't see it being great soundtrack to a firefight :) I'm that dude playin his trombone.

is it real? warning this vid has SPOILERS to series. Big ones. But has the song in it's entirety. I don't know what it was, but like I remember clearly just after I moved in here and was walking up the stairs, and this song stopped me dead in my tracks, like a trance.

Hey They Might Be Giants have so so many great songs, but this one is special to me, for some reason. Just tickles my neurotransmitters the right way I guess :) They have so many great songs I'd like to post, but can save for another day. Talk about fantastically talented musicians!

that story

Remembered name of story. Unfortunately my collection of Arthur C. Clarke stories is one of those books from the past, hope it didn't get thrown away :) My favorite story by him is called "Dog Star". Just always left me with such a profound feeling of existance, how wonderful and gloriously lucky it is to be alive. I gotta order this collection when I get some extra cash. I really liked that story about Ambrosia too heh, as it's more than a little twisted. That and I gotta dig out "The City and the Stars" when I tackle that big box, that book always made me feel awestruck, just carrying it around or touching it. It's funny what you remember sometimes. R.I.P. Mr. Clarke

wow

As if I didn't have enough things to do already...I just discovered the true glory of google reader.

Talk about overwhelming. That's my new favorite word. Pretty much sums up my perception of this universe.

:)

band I am really digging tonight

Forgotten hopes
Anathema

Hey you rotting in your alcoholic shell
Banging on the walls of your intoxicated mind
Do you ever wonder why you were left alone
As your heart grew colder and finally turned to stone

Did I punish you for dreaming?
Did I break your heart and leave you crying?
Don't you ever dream of escaping...

Pathetic oblivion
Forgotten hopes buried in your soul's lonely grave
Pathetic oblivion
Remember how you were before you locked your heart away

Did I punish you for dreaming?
Did I break your heart and leave you crying?
Do you ever dream of escaping...
Don't you ever dream of escaping?

Prick

excellent :)

Makebelieve
Prick
When you were young
Was there a time called one day
You would know all there was to know
If you survive
All of those girls around you
You carry their books they carried your mind
Make believe
That nothing is wrong
Make believe
Your going somewhere
Live your dream
So take it slow
And if you lose your way
Remember the moment you began
Fall back on your word
Heaven forbid your entry
A minor guilt complex dissolves
Make believe nothing is wrong
Make believe you've got something to say
Live your dream
(and never stop)
And nothing can matter to this man
Wish away all I know
Heaven is calling out
The easiest access to the crowd
I came for the house and the children
I let it all slip threw my hands
I feel like a weight has been lifted
And Nothing can matter to this man
I came for the car and the vacuum
Spinning the wheels into the void
I feel like my ship it has come in
But it was a joke - there's nothing aboard

R.I.P. Arthur C. Clarke

What an awesome author. Gonna have to pull out his short-story compilation I have buried around here somewhere..that story about the dog on the moon always makes me cry :( Here's a youtube link of a video he made a couple months ago... Maybe now he finally got some answers :) Ah, btw his "Against the Fall of Night" and rewrite "The City and the Stars" are a couple of books I haven't read since high school I'll probably never forget, he had such a spectacular imagination...godspeed Mr. Clarke!!!!

Pulp put to Archie and Veronica :)

I've recently found that band Pulp thanks to my friend on last.fm..here's a cartoon redone with the lyrics to "Common People" :)

BTW here is the youtube link to William Shatner's cover of same song...great job :)

relevant Patriots post

Look last season was nothing but awesomeness. You know, they only lost 1 game. Hmmm.... well look at the entire picture. Few guys getting older, few spots to fill. I am not ready for football season... Hopefully will be by August. Anyways, checked the newsgroup and heres a good post outlining the state of the team. What I've learned from 5 minutes after my team lost the Super Bowl this year is there are hundreds of retards who post on usenet lol. God, who invited them anyways. Hope they are ready for their crappy team to lose to the Pats again!!! :) Seriously, last season, when I think about it, is soooo confusing in my mind. Has to be one of the most freaking awesome seasons ever, and just the more mad props to the Giants...I don't blame them for playing like they did and taking advantage of the situation at all.

a trap!!!!

This song, it comes to it and I can put it on repeat and listen to for hours, is so pretty. Found it ah, 9-10 months ago and got burned out on it once, but not now. So gentle, so pretty.

Cached Lyrics
Feel so low
Porcupine tree

So see how long I can last
You can pretend that I don't exist for you
And I can laugh about it now
But I hated every minute
I was waiting for your email
And each day that you forgot to call
Just made me feel so low
So low

Christmas 1998
I tried to call
I just couldn't wait
And your message was out of date
So I left my voice on your machine
But you did not respond
OK OK OK you've won
You make me feel so low
So low

nice solo

Where we would be
Porcupine tree

Tied - tied to a time
When we knew that the sun would shine
And you were all smiles
And we could just talk for a while...
Of where we would be when the future comes
And how you would paint while I wrote my songs
If I could find you
And tell you about my life
Or maybe just write
And remind you of when we would dream...
Of where we would be when the future comes
And how you would paint while I wrote my songs
Strange how you never become
The person you see when you're young

good song, good album

Hours of wealth
Opeth

found a way
to rid myself clean of pain
and the fever thats been haunting me
has gone away
looking through my window
i seem to recognise
all the people passing by
but im alone
and far from home
no body knows me
never heard me saying good bye
never shall i speak to anyone again
all days are in darkness
and abiding my time
once i am sure of my task i will arise
again

Pats :)

This season has been nothing but utter awesome, who really gives a shit how the game turned out last night? Those guys kicked serious ass this season, I don't give a crap if they lost the Super Bowl. Shit happens you know? Go Pats :)

got a cell phone

The teeny-bopping whiper snappers I work with find it hard to believe a 31 year old has never had a cell phone, but I finally got one (not too hard to believe, I was never a nerd...I've always been a jock!)

I'm pretty happy with it, it lets me take pictures, and text message, and I have 4 gigs of room to put songs and stuff. It has bluetooth and I got some wireless headphones for it. The number will be the same as my old land line in a couple of days, I decided to ditch the land line (too much money). It also lets me go to websites and stuff, so I've been wasting a lot of time since I got it getting it set up like I want it... Can pretty much assure myself than I have no reason to be bored anymore since I got this mobile phone :) Here is webpage for phone if you are interested:

couple new pages I registered to

Here's a couple of links to pages I have control over, new to me mostly. Having fun with cell phone :)

del.icio.us

I signed up to this because I want a easy way to bookmark stuff then be able to go them fast on my cell phone. That's basically what I plan to use it for, however I may put a bunch of other stuff sometime. I used to put all sorts of cool links in my blog here or email people, nowadays last couple years just got jaded and realized you find cool stuff all the time so :)

flickr
Much the same thing, although I plan to put pictures I would like to share from my cell phone on here. Some day I'd like to shell out and buy a cheap real phone, but for now am happy as a clam to have a camera on my phone :) I haven't actually uploaded any photos yet, and time is running out tonight. But I will!

twitter

This is an annoying website, and I probably wouldn't consider it if I didn't have a good friend using it too. Concept is you just update it a lot with whatever you are doing or stuff you want to share and your friends can see it and you can see what they are doing, heh. Sortof pointless, but the super everyone all at once feed is sortof fun if you don't have any "friends" I guess.

Here is a picture of my good friend, Gump. He and I look at life in much the same way.
